About the Artist
Layet Johnson was born in 1985 in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he now lives and works. He received his M.F.A. from The University of Georgia in 2011. Johnson states that his drawing is the starting point for other material investigations in the studio. In treating other materials like drawings, Johnson highlights their innate freshness and enables their reading in simple semiotic arrangements.
Johnson’s work has been exhibited nationally with solo presentations at Hendrix College and Good Weather in Arkansas, The Invisible Hand in Kansas, and Ciné in Georgia. Group exhibitions featuring Johnson’s work have included Perfect Lovers, a Frieze Special Project at White Box Art Center, New York (2012,) Bad as I Wanna Be at Ortega Y Gasset Projects, Brooklyn (2013,) and the inaugural exhibition at 21C Museum Hotel in Bentonville, Arkansas (2013.) In 2011, Johnson was named one of 15 “Artists to Watch” by Modern Painters Magazine. Johnson is the director of Outer Space, a social network-based gallery.
